At Electrogusto, some projects stand out not just for the engineering challenge, but for the meaning they carry and Karl’s 1988 Subaru Sherpa is one of those special builds. This little classic wasn’t just a car; it was a favourite of Karl’s father, who proudly called it “the best little car in the world.” Being entrusted with something so personal is always a privilege, and it’s the kind of work that reminds us why we love what we do. Bringing a vehicle with deep family history back to life while giving it a modern electric futureis the perfect blend of heart and innovation. The Sherpa arrived ready for a new chapter, and our team set out to restore, repaint, install a set of cool Japanese rims and ultimately electrify it with the care it deserved.

We fitted it with a P70 electric motor, transforming the modest city runabout into a surprisingly lively machine. The new drivetrain delivers smooth, confident and effortless power far beyond what the original engine could offer while keeping the driving experience quiet, clean, and wonderfully calm.

Of course, converting a car as compact as a Subaru Sherpa presents its own unique challenge. Space is at an absolute premium.Every component the motor, controller, chargers, cooling, contactors, wiring, and battery modules had to be carefully planned and positioned. It was a genuine jigsaw puzzle, requiring creativity and precision from the whole Electrogusto team.

In the end, we engineered two custom battery boxes one in the front, one in the rear to achieve the perfect balance, performance, and safety without compromising the Sherpa’s charm or practicality.

The result is a joyful little EV that feels both nostalgic and new. It glides silently down the road, turns heads, and puts a smile on the face of anyone who sees it  or drives it. For Karl, it’s a connection to his father that will live on for many years. For us, it’s proof of what’s possible when sentiment and skilled craftsmanship come together.

We’re proud to have played a part in giving this “best little car in the world” a bright electric future.
